Influencing governments: By joining, you'll help unify and make visible the widespread support for Palestinians. In many countries, the majority of people oppose the current genocide. When this collective support is visible, it puts pressure on governments. They'll be forced to recognize that their policies don't reflect the will of their people and can no longer claim to be acting on your behalf when supporting these actions.
Supporting Palestinians: Palestinians have often felt forgotten and let down, with the ongoing violence sometimes becoming a sad reality for people in many countries. Your participation shows that you haven't forgotten the thousands of victims, both recent and historical. It demonstrates that the world won't accept the continuous erasure of Palestinians and their state. This show of solidarity can provide hope and strength to Palestinians, letting them know that people around the world stand with them.
Simplicity and resilience: While the Palestinian flag is a powerful and essential symbol, a new mark like ف (fa) offers key practical advantages. It is much simpler, making it incredibly easy to draw and reproduce. This simplicity makes it difficult to ban, unlike the Palestinian flag, which some countries have attempted to prohibit in certain places. The goal is to make support for Palestine visible everywhere, all the time. The ease of reproducing and displaying ف (fa) ensures it can be a constant and resilient form of protest and solidarity and lower the threshold of showing solidarity. ف (fa) will allow all those to become visible who are afraid of saying or doing the wrong thing, who are unsure about how they can show their support for Palestinians or who do not have the resources needed to go to protests or engage in similar forms of activism.
Unifying a diverse movement: The Palestinian cause has many different viewpoints on what should be done. While these debates are absolutely essential, a symbol like ف (fa) helps to unify the movement by focusing on the core beliefs we can all agree on. It brings everyone together around three universally shared messages: the genocide must end, Palestinians deserve to live peacefully in their own state, and there must be accountability for past crimes. Whoever displays ف (fa) expresses their agreement with these three messages – not more, and not less.
ف (fa) does not stand for hateful or violent acts targeting human beings solely because of their nationality, ethnicity, race, religion, or similar characteristics. ف (fa) does not endorse any illegal activity and does not call on anyone to engage in such activity.
There are millions of things to say about what is currently happening, and what has been happening in Palestine. And there are even more ways of saying it. The three messages chosen are the ones that, in this moment, seem to matter the most.
Some might have chosen slightly different messages or a different wording. We fully understand this, and we do not claim that the three core messages are the only acceptable ones. However, given the urgency of the current situation, our focus must be on what unites us, rather than what divides us.
The goal of this movement is to unite all those who support Palestine and who refuse to normalise the horror of the current situation. The more we are, the more power we have. Even if your version of the core messages might be slightly different, if you agree with their general spirit, this movement is your movement.
The word 'genocide' has a specific legal meaning. Leading international human rights organisations (Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch) as well as two prominent Israeli organisations (B'Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights) have published reports detailing why Israel's conduct in Gaza most likely amounts to genocide. The International Court of Justice has equally found that the situation in Gaza constitutes a plausible genocide. In other words, there is plenty of evidence indicating that what Israel is doing legally amounts to a genocide.
Apart from any legal categorizations, the term 'genocide' carries a moral and political meaning. It is a powerful way of saying: 'Thousands of people are being killed simply because of where and who they are. This is unacceptable and it needs to stop.'
Even if you struggle with the specific term 'genocide': if this message resonates with you, you are in the right place.
You, and everyone else who joins. This movement is not about a specific person or group of persons and their specific role in the movement. Everyone who joins is an equal part of the movement. We are focused on working towards peace and justice for Palestinians, and only that. Anything that distracts from this is unimportant.
